NATCHEZ — What had been a good low-scoring game through four innings turned into a slugfest as the Franklin County Lady Dawgs hung on for a 10-7 win over the Cathedral Lady Green Wave Tuesday afternoon at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex.
There a combined 19 hits in the game — 13 by Franklin County and six by Cathedral.
“I was very pleased. We’re working with a hitting coach, so our hitting’s not consistent. But it’s getting there,” Cathedral head coach Pam Clayton said. “Franklin County is a bigger school. They’re a hard-hitting school.”
Both teams scored one run in the first inning and went scoreless three straight innings to keep it at 1-1.
The Lady Dawgs (4-3) took the lead with two runs in the top of the fifth inning before the Lady Green Wave scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 4-3 lead.
But Cathedral (1-2) couldn’t hold on to the lead as Franklin County scored two runs in the top of the sixth for a 5-4 lead. It looked like the Lady Dawgs were about to win the game until they loaded the bases and the Lady Green Wave scored the game-tying run on a walk in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.
Franklin County scored five runs in the top of the eighth inning. Cathedral managed two runs, but came up a few runs short.
“Anytime you have games that make your stomach hurt, those are the good games. This was definitely one of them,” Clayton said.
