GALLMAN — Huntington head coach Chad Harkins had to like what he saw from the Hounds Thursday at the Copiah Academy Varsity Jamboree.
In its first game, Huntington defeated Trinity Episcopal 13-0. Led by Martez Tolliver and Jody Cottongin, the Hounds rushed for 101 yards.
“We didn’t throw the ball but one time,” Harkins said. “We ran the ball well, so we stuck with it. “Our defense played real well.”
Trinity head coach David King said the Saints didn’t have any determination or vigor against the Hounds.
“The first game we looked like we’ve never seen a football field,” King said. “Huntington was more physical than we were and they just pushed us around.”
In its second game, Huntington moved the ball with ease against Class AAA Jackson Academy in a 15-14 loss to the Raiders.
“Defense looked good except for pass coverage,” Harkins said. “The offense moved the ball extremely well. Had big runs by most of our backs. Josh Lee did a great job blocking, Overall, I was pretty pleased.”
Huntington rushed for 160 yards against Jackson Academy and scored two times. The Raiders also scored twice against the Hounds’ defense.
Trinity did play much better, especially on defense, albeit in a 6-0 loss to the Raiders.
“The second game I was pleased with our determination. We made some adjustments and played with more desire,” King said. “The second game we looked like the traditional Trinity football team we put on the field.”
