Natchez — As of Monday, the cost of litter in Adams County will be more than just unsightly trash on the side of the road.

The Adams County Board of Supervisors voted to enact an anti-litter ordinance — with a fine attached — at their Monday meeting.

The fine for a litter violation was set as at least $100 and no more than $500.

The overall goal of the ordinance is to give the judges the authority to give fines in court for littering, board President Darryl Grennell said.

This is the first ordinance of its kind in Adams County, and those who litter could previously only be fined $50, the state imposed sanction.

The need for the ordinance came up earlier this summer when the supervisors voted to offer a reward for anyone who provided information that would lead to the conviction of a litterer.

Without an ordinance, there would have been no way to fund the reward system except out of the county’s general fund, whereas with an ordinance the reward funds could be channeled from the fines collected.

The board opened the floor for a public hearing about the ordinance, but the hearing was closed when there was no public comment.
