D.A. Biglane shut down for repairs

VIDALIA — The road leading to the Vidalia Industrial Park was temporarily closed Thursday after large trucks reportedly damaged it beyond safe use.

D.A. Biglane Road, which connects Louisiana 131 and Airport Road, was originally built to service the industrial park, Mayor Hyram Copeland said.

However, in recent weeks large trucks exceeding the weight limit restrictions for the road have caused such significant damage to its structure that the road had to be closed for repair, Copeland said.

“The trucks have made it where there are deep indentions in the road that make it unsafe for other drivers,” he said. “They have just torn the road up, and my concern is for safety.”

The current load limit on the road was 10 tons, but the city plans to drop the limit to five tons once the road has been repaired, Copeland said.

The closure to all through traffic will be in effect for the next 30 to 45 days, he said.

A barrier was erected at the Vidalia canal crossing of the road to keep vehicles from driving through while the repairs are being done, Copeland said.

Though the road was originally outside the Vidalia city limits — and some currently still is — some of the road has since been incorporated into the city, he said.

“There are some houses being built out there now, and the citizens living out there said most of the damage was been done in the 10 days to two weeks since big trucks started driving on it,” Copeland said.

Once repairs are made to the road, the load limit will be strictly enforced, and the city will write tickets for those who exceed it, Copeland said.
