BOGUE CHITTO — The Cathedral Lady Green Wave went undefeated at the 2007 Bogue Chitto Invitational Slowpitch Tournament Saturday, yet they did not win the tournament.
In fact, they didn’t even get to play in the championship game of the tournament because heavy rain from thunderstorms in the early afternoon caused the remaining games to be rained out.
And that included the game that would have determined Cathedral’s opponent in the finals. Enterprise and West Lincoln faced each other in the semifinals in the bottom half of the bracket and that game was in the ninth inning with the score at 1-1 when the rain came pouring down and the tournament was called.
“We didn’t care who we played. Enterprise or West Lincoln, it didn’t matter,” Cathedral head coach Pam Clayton said. “Our players wanted to win this tournament.”
Cathedral used a six-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-7 lead, then held on for a 9-8 win over the Wesson Lady Cobras in its first game, which started at 9 a.m.
While the offense for the Lady Green Wave got off to a good start, the early start was a key in them committing seven errors. They scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning to cut Wesson’s lead from 4-0 to 4-3.
However, the Lady Cobras got those three runs back in the top of the second inning, two on a home run by Ann Shelby Davis, and appeared to have regained the momentum with a 7-3 lead. But Cathedral showed its resiliency by rallying in the bottom of the second.
Ginny Daggett had the big hit for the Lady Green Wave with a two-run home run as they took the two-run lead. Wesson scored one run in the top of the third inning to make it a one-run game, but was held scoreless in the final two innings.
“We hit very well. Played well as a team,” Clayton said. “They discovered that they can win some games. Made their routine plays and they hit and they hit hard. It’s what we’ve been waiting to see.”
In its second game, Cathedral broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the bottom of the second inning and defeated the host Lady Bobcats 6-3 to improve to 5-2 overall.
After allowing nine hits in the game against Wesson, Rachel Smilo settled down and held Bogue Chitto, the ‘visiting’ team in the game, to just six hits. She also went 2-for-3 with a double, as did Daggett and Anna Huffines.
Franklin County lost to West Lincoln 5-3 in its first game before defeating South Pike 14-2 in three and a half innings to go 1-1.
In the lost to West Lincoln, Lady Dawgs pitcher Heather Havard allowed five runs in the first three innings before being relieved. Lady Bears pitcher Shelby Lofton pitched well in the first three innings.
However, Franklin County loaded the bases in the top of the fourth and Desiree Buie doubled in all three runs to make it a 5-3 game. However, Jessica Franklin pitched a scoreless fifth inning to preserve the win for West Lincoln.
The Lady Dawgs’ offense had better success against South Pike. They scored eight runs in the bottom of the second inning to open up a 9-0 lead and scored five more runs an inning later to take a commanding 14-1 lead.
Buie had another outstanding game at the plate as she went 3-for-3 with a double. Kristen Oglesby went 2-for-3 with a double and winning pitcher Havard went 2-for-3.
