Whooping cough cases in state up to 140

JACKSON (AP) — The state Department of Health says there have been 140 cases of pertussis or whooping cough in the state.
The department said Wednesday the outbreak is largely in east central Mississippi. The counties included are Leake, Neshoba, Kemper, Scott, Newton, Lauderdale, Smith, Jasper and Clarke Of the number of cases, 105 are in that district. One death has been reported.
Since last week epidemiologists with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been in the state at the request of the Health Department and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. They are looking at the risk factors for disease and will make recommendations regarding intervention.
The Health Department and the Band of Choctaw Indians are operating vaccination clinics, performing early diagnosis and treatment for cases of pertussis, and providing medication for those who have been exposed to the disease.
Pertussis is a contagious bacterial infection that affects the respiratory system.
