TWENTY YEARS AGO — In his major league debut, Atlanta Braves pitcher Pete Smith gives up three hits in his first eight innings before giving up three hits in the ninth and Dale Murphy hits his career-high 38th home run as the Braves hold on for a 4-2 win over the San Diego Padres.

TEN YEARS AGO — Ferriday High senior Jeremy Burns is named The Natchez Democrat’s Player of the Week for his performance in a 33-6 win over Pointe Coupee. Burns spent most of the game on an offensive line that allowed the Trojans to rack up 158 yards rushing and 118 yards passing.

FIVE YEARS AGO — Tampa Bay punter Tom Tupa, trying to avoid be tackled in the end zone for a safety, tosses a left-handed pass that is picked off by linebacker James Allen for the game-winning touchdown as the New Orleans Saints defeat the Buccaneers 26-20 in overtime.
