NATCHEZ – Services for Luther T. Newman, 84, of Natchez, who died Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at Natchez Regional Medical Center, will be at 2:00 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel with the Rev. Dan Wynn officiating.
Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from noon until service time today at the funeral home.
Mr. Newman was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Natchez, the son of Benjamin Gordon and Bertie Vidale Sawyer Newman. He was a member of First Baptist Church. Mr. Newman served as first lieutenant in 8th Air Force as a B-24 bomber pilot. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with three clusters; and ETO ribbon with four battle stars. He took part in D-Day. Mr. Newman retired from Natchez Equipment Company after 28 years of service. He was a long-time member of Natchez Kiwanis Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Betty Simonton Newman; son, Luther Theodore Newman Jr.; infant son, James Gordon Newman; brothers, Leslie Newman, Benjamin Garland Newman and Conrad Newman; sisters, Beatrice Newman Baldwin, Edell Rogers, Ethel Bingham, Sarah Webb, Thelma Shelton and Shirley Kempinska.
Survivors include a grandson, Christopher T. Newman of Natchez; granddaughter, Nan Straub and husband, Trey, both of Henderson, Texas; great-grandchildren, Madison Rose Newman, Haelyn Isabella Straub, Suzannah Abigail Straub; daughter-in-law, Carole Cotten and husband, Julius; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Kent Rogers, Julius Cotten, Skip Shelton, Mike Baldwin, Butch Kempinska, Spike Newman and Bill Baldwin.
Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.
