NATCHEZ — Early on Thursday morning Charles W. Washington, 28, was taken into custody by the Natchez Police Department and charged with armed carjacking.
Police chief Mike Mullins said Washington was trying to flag-down a ride at approximately the 300 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Street at about 4 a.m. on Thursday.
One motorist did pick up Washington and drove him a few blocks when Washington allegedly pulled out a gun and stole the driver’s car and wallet, Mullins said.
The victim, Mullins said, alerted an officer just a few blocks away.
That officer radioed ahead to another officer monitoring traffic on D’Evereux Drive.
Once the second officer spotted the vehicle Washington was driving he gave chase for just a few blocks, Mullins said, until Washington parked the car an attempted to flee on foot.
Mullins said Washington was apprehended just moments later.
Washington was being held without bond and will be arraigned on Monday.
