MONTEREY, La. — With Andy Lucas out of the lineup, Cathedral had to rely on Juan Gray and he came through as he scored 34 points to lead the Green Wave past the Harrisonburg Bulldogs 53-49 Friday night at the Monterey Tournament.
Gray made seven three-pointers in the game, but none were bigger than the two he made in the second half to give the Green Wave (6-1) the lead. He also had six steals and five assists.
“Andy hurt his ankle last night (against Monterey) and he didn’t play tonight,” Cathedral head coach Peter Arnold said. “We missed Andy tonight because they’re big and strong. It was a physical ball game. When you miss your big guy, it’s tough.”
The outcome of the game was decided at the free-throw line late in the fourth quarter. Jamerson Jones, who finished with nine points, and Geoffrey Martin each made a free throw to give Cathedral a four-point lead.
“We missed a few, but when it came down to crunch time, our seniors made some to seal the deal,” Arnold said. “Obviously Juan had a huge night. We counted on him too much, but he comes through.”
J. Huff led Harrisonburg with 20 points and J. Roarke had nine points.
Arnold said he hopes to have Lucas back in the line-up when Cathedral takes on LaSalle today at 5:20 p.m. With a win, the Green Wave will go 3-0 in the round-robin tournament.
