TWENTY YEARS AGO — Before New Orleans’ 24-10 win over the Houston Oilers for its 10th win of the season, the No. 8 jersey wore by Saints quarterback Archie Manning from 1971 to 1982 is retired.

TEN YEARS AGO — Despite throwing for 3,819 yards and 36 touchdowns, Tennessee Volunteers senior quarterback Petyon Manning finishes second behind Michigan cornerback Charles Woodson for the Heisman Trophy.

FIVE YEARS AGO — Longtime track coach Henry “Doc” Woods, whose boys’ and girls’ teams won 641 meets, and Cathedral athletic director Roy Garcia will be inducted into the Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame.
