VIDALIA — By the close of the Clerk of Court’s Office Thursday, 39 candidates had qualified for various municipal and political party elections.

Qualifying for the Feb. 9 municipal primary continues today until close at the Concordia Parish Clerk of Court’s office.

Though the mayoral races for Clayton, Ferriday and Vidalia all have multiple candidates, all of those running for alderman in the municipalities — except for one challenger in District 3 in Vidalia — are unchallenged.

District 3 is an “at large” district, in which voters choose three candidates from the total field.

Likewise, except for the Democratic Parish Executive Committee District 1 Place A position, none of the other party committee seats have more than one candidate contending for them.

The chief of police position in Clayton currently has only one candidate, Valerie Thompson Parker.

The presidential preference election will also be Feb. 9, and anyone wishing to be on the state ballot to make a bid for the Democratic or Republican presidential nomination must qualify at the Secretary of State’s office in Baton Rouge today.

For the Republican and Democratic candidates in the municipal races, qualifying fees are $80, and those running independently or third-party have a fee of $40.

Fees for the Democratic or Republican committee positions at the parish and state level are $112.50, and those qualifying for the presidential nomination have a fee of $1,125.
