LACASSINE, La. (AP) — A six-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 in Jefferson Davis Parish sent five people to the hospital, Louisiana State Police said Sunday.
The crash occurred after Jefferson Davis Parish Sheriff’s Department blocked Interstate 10 to assist the fire department with a burning pickup parked on the shoulder.
Enrique Garza, 42, of Brownsville, Texas, driving a tractor-trailer truck, failed to notice that traffic was stopped and crashed into it.
Six vehicles were involved in a series of crashes that left five people injured. The injuries ranged from minor to critical, police said.
One driver, Christopher McDonald, 20, of Iowa, was transported to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital by Acadian Life Flight with critical injuries.
Garza was issued a citation for careless operation.
I-10 was closed for two hours and traffic had to be routed onto U.S 90 in Welsh while the interstate was cleared.
