WOODVILLE — Centreville’s defense shut down Todd Gonda in the second half and Brad Jelks stepped up on the offensive end for the Tigers as they defeated the WCCA Rams 57-48 Friday night at the WCCA New Year’s Shootout.
Gonda scored 19 points in the first half, 14 of them in the first quarter, as WCCA (6-7) took a 33-24 lead at halftime. But Centreville changed its defense in the second half and Gonda was held to just two points to finish with 21 for the game.
“They made some adjustments at halftime with their defense to focus on Gonda,” WCCA head coach Ray Olive said. “We needed someone to step up for us and George Davis did well for us in the third. In the fourth, it looked like our legs broke down. I’m not going to make playing a second game an excuse.”
Olive was referring to his team having already played one game, a 42-38 come-from-behind win over the Ben’s Ford Eagles. That was the first game of the day and it started at 10 a.m.
The Tigers took advantage of the Rams’ offensive woes and outscored them 33-15 in the second half to take the comeback win. Even though Jelks made three of his four three-pointers in the second quarter, his impact was big for the visitors.
“Jelks stepped up in a big way. That kept their momentum going,” Olive said. “(Kyle) Brown is a good, steady player. We focused on Brown and (Cade) Lockwood. We seemed to do well on Lockwood in the first half.”
Brown led Centreville with 18 points while Lockwood scored most of his nine points in the second half. Davis finished with 13 points for WCCA.
Centreville won the game by outscoring WCCA 18-6 in the fourth quarter.
“I like to play our guys as much as possible during the holidays. We should have finished strong in the fourth quarter,” Olive said. “We broke down on fundamentals.”
In the win over Ben’s Ford, Trumaine Norwood led WCCA with 12 points and Gonda had 10 points. Ethan Bernon led the Eagles with a game-high 23 points.
