NATCHEZ — U.S. Senator Roger Wicker will make a stop at the Natchez Convention Center at 10 a.m. today.
The stop is part of a five-day, statewide bus tour Wicker kicked off Monday.
Wicker will also make a stop in Woodville at 11:30 a.m. today.
“This is basically a meet and greet event,” said John R. Junkin II with the Mississippi Republican Executive Committee. “He wants to meet as many elected officials and as much of the general public as possible and get to know the needs and the desires of the area.”
It is not often citizens get a chance to meet their senators, and those who can should take the opportunity to do so, Junkin said.
“You’ll see your senator once or maybe twice a year, so you need to take advantage of the fact he is in town,” Junkin said. “Sometimes it’s hard to get people to come to southwest Mississippi. We’re not on the beaten path.”
Wicker was serving as the U.S. representative for Mississippi’s first congressional district when he was appointed in late December by Gov. Haley Barbour to fill the spot vacated by Sen. Trent Lott’s retirement.
Wicker is currently campaigning to serve out the remainder of Lott’s term.
A date for the special election to determine if he will do so has not yet been set.
