NATCHEZ — Maddie Kirkwood had one goal and two assists and Cathedral’s defense didn’t allow a single shot on goal in the second half as the Lady Green Wave defeated the Loyd Star Lady Hornets 4-0 Tuesday night at D’Evereux Stadium.
Despite the bad weather that moved through the area at around 6 p.m., the game went on anyway after a 45-minute delay. But that didn’t slow down the Lady Green Wave as they scored two goals in each half.
“Since it was a district game, I wanted to get it in,” Lady Green Wave head coach David Gaudé said. “We’re on a six-game winning streak.”
Joanna David scored the first goal with an assist from Kirkwood at the 18th minute of the first half. Lani Griffith then scored on a corner kick just five minutes later to give Cathedral (6-2, 4-0 in Region 7-1A/2A/3A) a 2-0 halftime lead.
Kirkwood then made it 3-0 in favor on the Lady Green Wave on a breakaway goal at the 35th minute of the second half and then she assisted on Anne Elise Rinehart’s goal with two minutes left with a nine cross pass.
Gaudé added that another reason for the team’s winning streak has been the play of the midfielders and defenders.
“In the first half we had 15 shots on goal to four for them. In the second half we had 13 shots on goal to none for Loyd Star,” Gaudé said. “Our midfielders and defenders shut them down.”

NATCHEZ — Senior forward David Jenson scored the game’s only goal just two and a half minutes into the game as the Green Wave (7-4, 3-1) defeated the Hornets in region play.
“The rest of the game was a battle,” Green Wave head coach Rick Simons said. “We always have good games between each other. It went down to the last minute of the game.”
Loyd Star had a chance to tie the game, but Cathedral senior goalkeeper Jesse Morrison made a spectacular save to keep the Hornets shut out.
