Free throws help Saints pull one out

MONROE, La. — Thanks to some clutch free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter, the Trinity Episcopal Saints defeated the River Oaks Mustangs 58-50 Friday night in a back-and-forth District 3-AA game.
River Oaks got off to a good start and led Trinity, ranked No. 2 in Class AA, 15-7 at the end of the first quarter. But the Saints responded by outscoring the Mustangs 19-7 in the second quarter to take a four-point halftime lead. The two teams went into the fourth quarter tied at 36, but Trinity pulled away by outscoring River Oaks 22-14.
Trinity (12-3, 2-0) made 16 of its 21 free throws and connected on four three-pointers. Brandon Daggs led the Saints with 19 points and Matthew Freeman had 15 points. Jordan Smith led River Oaks with a game-high 27 points. The Mustangs stayed in the game by going 15-of-19 from the line and by making five three-pointers.
Cathedral 62, Salem 45
TYLERTOWN — Andy Lucas finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds while Juan Gray had 15 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as the Green Wave defeated the Wildcats Friday night to remain undefeated in Region 8-1A.
Cathedral (16-3, 5-0) took a 14-3 lead after one quarter of play and then led 27-12 by halftime. And while the Green Wave’s defense relaxed some in the second half, its offense didn’t. Daniel Culbert added 10 points for Cathedral.
Bowling Green 69, Centreville 61
FRANKLINTON, La. — The Tigers pushed the No. 1 team in Class AA to the limit, but the Buccaneers were able to hold on for an eight-point win in a District 5-AA game Friday night.
Bowling Green (13-0) was led by Trevor Thomas with 27 points and Tyler Thomas with 19 points. The Buccaneers took an 11-point halftime lead, but they had to hold off a fourth-quarter rally to defeat Centreville (8-6). The Tigers were led by Cade Lockwood with 20 points and Colby Lockwood with 11 points.
Chamberlain-Hunt 60, WCCA 31
WOODVILLE — Even though the Wildcats had played just six games this season going into this non-district contest with the Rams Friday night, they played like a team that could be a contender in District 3-AA.
Chamberlain-Hunt, now 5-2, dominated this game from the opening tip and was never seriously challenged by WCCA (10-9). Hahn led the Wildcats with 16 points and Jeffery had 13 points. Todd Gonda led the Rams with 10 points.
Natchez High 64, Terry 52
NATCHEZ — James Reed, Kendall Logan and Kenny Jackson combined for 38 points as the host Bulldogs used a balanced scoring attack to defeat the visiting Bulldogs in Division 6-5A action.
Reed led Natchez High (10-8, 2-2) with 14 points while Logan had 13 points and Jackson had 11 points. The host Bulldogs never gave Terry much of a chance to get back into the game after taking a 16-11 lead. D. Allen led the visiting Bulldogs with 20 points.
Huntington 51, Tallulah Academy 47
FERRIDAY — Tyler Pere scored a game-high 20 points and Kevin Brown had 16 points as the Hounds held off a late rally to defeat the Trojans Friday night in District 6-A action.
Huntington (7-10, 3-1) led by 11 points as the fourth quarter got under way, but Tallulah would not go away quietly. The Trojans scored 20 points in the final quarter, but their rally fell a bit short. John Draper and Ashley Halterman led Tallulah with 10 points each.
Jefferson County 77, North Pike 70
FAYETTE — Kadon Day scored 28 points and Percy Turner had 17 points as the Tigers improved to 14-9 overall and 5-1 in Region 7-3A with a close win over the Jaguars despite a 34-point performance by the Jaguars’ Phillip McCray.
Jefferson County took a 17-14 lead over North Pike, but McCray along with Albert Matthews, who had 22 points, kept the Jaguars in the game even though they weren’t able to get over the hump.
Prairie View 68, ACCS 36
NATCHEZ — Robby Jones and Taylor Sadler led Prairie View with 12 points each as the Spartans dominated the first half en route to a 32-point win over the Rebels in a District 3-AA game.
Prairie View took a 22-8 lead after one quarter of play and then outscored ACCS 20-9 for a commanding 42-17 halftime lead. Bryce Murray led the Rebels with 12 points.
