Turner elected new mayor in Clayton

VIDALIA — At the close of polls Saturday, Clayton voters had elected a new mayor.

With 51.92 percent of the vote — 162 votes total — Rydell Turner was elected the new mayor of Clayton over incumbent Wilbert Washington.

Washington received 106 votes, and challenger Houston Holmes received 44 votes.

In the chief of police race, Clarence “PaPa” Skipper received 170 votes, 54.49 percent of the total vote, defeating challengers Bobby L. Madison, who received 101 votes, and Valerie Thompson Parker, who received 41 votes.

The town also elected five aldermen, Floyd Barber, “Sandy” Clayton, Willie “Bill” Evans, Irene Jefferson and Carl R. Thompson Sr.
