NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Barack Obama’s commanding victory in Louisiana’s Democratic presidential primary was predictable in a state where Jesse Jackson won twice, but it was surprising to see Mike Huckabee beat John McCain in the Republican race, analyst Elliott Stonecipher says.
Stonecipher had expected McCain to win ‘‘based almost totally on the fact that Huckabee did not have what I would even consider a semblance of an organization. He didn’t spend any money.
‘‘To the extent that anybody has an organization on the ground, that is certainly John McCain,’’ Stonecipher said.
The voting followed a pattern seen across the Deep South and in some other states, such as Kansas: Large numbers of very conservative voters and people who described themselves as born-again or evangelical turned out for Huckabee, a former Baptist minister.
