VIDALIA — Vidalia played hard, but couldn’t pull out the win as Ouachita High School defeated the Vikings 14-10 in their season opener.

Vidalia jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Trey Barnes knocked in a run followed by two RBIs by Jake DeWeese.

In the second inning, Ouachita picked up a run off of an RBI double by Adam Coro, but the Vikings responded in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single by Mason Ozburn.

The Lions broke the game wide open in the third as they batted around and knocked in seven runs in the inning.

The Vikings responded again in the bottom of the third with Trey Brasher, Hunter Martin and Seth Barlow all knocking in a run.

Ouachita didn’t back down in the fourth though and pulled out three more runs to increase their lead to four by the end of the inning.

The Lions picked up another run in the top of the fifth thanks to a Ryan Gebhardt homerun, but Vidalia responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to pull within two.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, they couldn’t manage to score in the sixth or the seventh, and the Lions added two insurance runs to cap off the victory.

“We played hard tonight,” Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “Our pitching was shaky though.”

Vidalia faces Monterey this Thursday in the Cathedral Tournament.
