VIDALIA — Cathedral and Vidalia battled to the end, but the Vikings would end up with a 9-8 victory thanks to a clutch bunt by Beau Doughty in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“Our boys fought all the way to the end,” Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said.
Cathedral took advantage of a few Vidalia mistakes and tallied four runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Vikings.
The Vikings led 7-5 going into the seventh inning but Cathedral wouldn’t go down silently.
Caleb Johnson hit a two-run double to give the Green Wave an 8-7 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning.
“It was good to take that lead in the top of the seventh,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said.
Unfortunately for Cathedral, wild pitches and bad throws would put them right back in a hole.
Jake DeWeese drew a walk for the Vikings to start off the bottom of the seventh.
Trey Lillie was put in the game to run for DeWeese and made it around the bases after a wild throw to first base.
Cameron Boyette struck out, but made it to second after the pitch went into the dirt.
Boyette then made it over to third base when Beau Doughty came up to bat.
It was a 2-1 count when Boyette took an early jump and Doughty laid down a bunt to score Boyette before Cathedral could attempt to throw him out.
“We didn’t play well tonight,” Cathedral head coach Craig Beesley said. “I was disappointed in our defensive effort.”
Hoffpauir was just happy with the victory.
“It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win,” Hoffpauir said.
Beau Doughty picked up the win for Vidalia while Tyler Morrison was handed the loss.
Caleb Johnson went 2-3 for Cathedral with a walk and 3 RBI’s.
Cameron Boyette was 2-4 for the Vikings with two singles.
Cathedral’s next game will be at home against Vidalia next Monday.
Vidalia travels to Pineville this weekend to participate in the Pineville Tournament.
