Everyone that moves to Natchez has a dream for this distinctive city. We all seem to see so clearly the potential that lies within this intriguing, wonderful place.

I have been here 14 years and have definitely had a hand in some of my dreams for the city coming true. Maybe that is what makes Natchez so special. There is the ability to be involved and make things happen. Never have I seen a place with so many people so willing to volunteer and see other’s visions come to reality. Many people feel that the contribution of the arts in a community is crucial to a city’s well being. The Mississippi Arts Commission’s slogan is “Art Means Business.” No community can survive on one industry to make it healthy. There must be a balance.

Now another of my “hope to see one days” has become a reality. A group of artists and supporters have founded the non-profit ArtsNatchez Gallery. It is a place for local artists to sell their creations — drawings, pottery, paintings, sculptures and photographs. It will be yet another positive business that enhances downtown Natchez. The planned opening is in late March 2008 at 110 N. Union.

There will be special events and showings along with visiting artists. The most important aspect is that this will highlight even more local art along with the other galleries and businesses that now showcase Natchez’ many talented artists.

Ten years ago, Natchez had one art gallery. The area is now thriving with new producing artists who have moved here and are joining with the established local artists. New events have sprung from this renewed interest such, as Art & Soul Festival and the Natchez Artist Studio Tour. Add this to our other exciting events such as Natchez Festival of Music, the Literary and Cinema Celebration, Pilgrimage, Blues Fest, the Great Mississippi River Balloon Race, the River Road Food Festival and you have to see a bright future for Natchez. We are a tourist destination because we have something very special to share with others. It is evident in the new residents who come to visit and decide to make Natchez their home. ArtsNatchez Gallery is proof that dreams do come true.
