NATCHEZ — The corner of Washington and North Canal Streets is about to get a little fatter.

Owner of Fat Mama’s Tamales David Gammill said construction of the soon-to-be new home of the restaurant is right on schedule.

Anyone who regularly passes by the construction site might think the building is going up quickly but Gammill said that’s simply the nature of construction.

“It goes from just a slab to having framed walls pretty quickly,” he said.

In actuality Gammill said the construction will not be finished until mid to late June.

After that he expects to have the restaurant opened by mid July.

“We’re looking forward to it,” he said.

Gammill said he will personally be looking forward to higher ceilings and better parking accommodations.

“You won’t need four wheel drive to park at the new place when it rains,” Gammill said referring to the steep parking lot Fat Mama’s has right now.

But parking won’t be the only thing to change at Fat Mama’s.

Gammill said he is considering a few new menu additions and will likely need to hire additional staff.

“Right now I don’t know how many more people we’ll need,” he said.

And while the crew gets ready for new changes yet to come, Gammill said much of the restaurant will remain the same.

“It’s still going to be the same laid back, informal feel,” he said. “That’s what a lot of people like.”

In keeping with that same laid back feel, Gammill said the motif of the new Fat Mama’s won’t change much.

Getting to where the restaurant is did not come easily, Gammill said.

Gammill faced, and eventually overcame, a small handful of obstacles from city officials when he first pitched the restaurant.

But that’s in the past.

“It feels good to see it coming to fruition now,” he said.
