NATCHEZ — The Grand Soleil-sponsored team of Dan Bland, Bill Lambert, Baxter Lee and Phillip West finished at 20-under-par 52 to win the 15th annual Natchez-Adams County Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble Thursday afternoon at Beau Pré Country Club.
Eagles on a pair of par-5 holes on the back nine, Nos. 10 and 18, were key to the team’s three-shot win. The Bland-Lambert-Lee-West team also had 16 birdies during their round.
“Everything worked. We got lucky and had good contributions from the whole team,” said Lambert, who took Kent Hudson’s place on the team.
“The mayor played unbelievable well. Bill played unbelievably well. He putted well. Baxter and I were along for the ride,” Bland said.
Second place went to the Energy Drilling-sponsored team of David Cothren, Mel Beltzhoover, Jordan Farmer and Gary Farmer, which had 15 birdies and an eagle on No. 14 to finish with a round of 17-under-par 55.
“We played alright. We made a few putts. It was fun,” Cothren said.
A scorecard playoff determined third place as three teams finished at 15-under-par 57. That went to the Oakland-sponsored team of Ed Godfrey, Bucky Merritt, Wesley Rogers and Jeff Burkhalter thanks to a birdie on No. 9.
The other teams that shot a 57 were the Waste Management-sponsored team of Andy Yates, Jay Lessley, Hayden Kaiser and Tom Matthews and the Dr. Anderson-sponsored team of Dr. Jeff Anderson, Stephen Hollingsworth, Tommy Geoghegan and Casey Ham.
Debbie Hudson, president of the Natchez-Adams Chamber of Commerce, said this year’s tournament was a big success.
“It’s been great. The weather was great. Everybody’s here to have fun,” Hudson said. “We had a max turnout. We had 22 teams. The proceeds go back to the chamber. It’s a nice cross-section so they can meet everyone. If someone gets a hole-in-one, they get a new car.”
Unfortunately, no one was able to ace any of the par-3 holes during the four-man scramble.
