VIDALIA — A combination of powerful hitting and walks led Vidalia to an 18-4 win over the Block Bears in five innings in Vidalia Saturday.

The Vikings (10-5, 3-1) scored at least three runs in every inning and never allowed Block an opportunity to gain momentum.

Trey Barnes had an outstanding game for the Vikings, hitting a two-run home run in the first inning and another three-run shot in the third inning.

“Trey had a great game for us,” Vidalia head coach Johnny Lee Hoffpauir said. “He was very disciplined at the plate.”

Vidalia led by 14 after the fourth inning and Block needed to score five runs in the fifth just to stay in the game but the Vikings played great defense and stopped the Bears from scoring any runs to take the win.

“We had a lot of patience at the plate and we hit very well,” Hoffpauir said. “We played mistake-free defense which helped us control the game.”

“Our pitching let us down,” Block head coach Steven McCarthy said. “It was just a bad outing for us.”

Jake DeWeese picked up the win for the Vikings and John Davis took the loss for the Bears.

Barnes batted 3-for-3 with two home runs, a single, and five RBIs for the Vikings.

Teammate John Brixey also hit a three-run home run for Vidalia.

Candarius Johnson had a 2-for-3 effort for Block with two doubles.

Vidalia travels to Avoyelles Monday for a District 3-3A matchup between the two first place teams in the district. Block plays Northwood Monday at home.
