NATCHEZ – Services for Sadie Hughes Bacon, 77, of Natchez, who died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Promise Specialty Hospital in Ferriday, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Baptist Church with the Rev. Samuel Hines and Dr. Freddie Schiele officiating.
Burial will be Monday, May 12, 2008 at Natchez National Cemetery at 10 a.m. under the direction of R.D. Mackel and Sons.
Visitation is from 5 to 6 p.m. with Eastern Star and Masonic Rites being performed from 6 to 7 p.m. today at King Solomon Baptist Church.
Mrs. Bacon was born Jan. 7, 1931, in Liberty, the daughter of Mary Schoby and Robert Hughes.
She attended Liberty Public Schools and received a B.S. degree from Alcorn State University. She was a lifelong member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, having served over 50 years. She was also church secretary. She was a member of ADAH Grand Chapter, Queen Esther Chapter #1, Alkoran #35 Xi Epsilon (Zeta Phi Beta). Mrs. Hughes was a former educator and recently retired as a case manager and social worker with AJFC, having served over 30 years. She served on the Mississippi Funeral Service Board, appointed by former Gov. William Winter, the Energy Board of State of MS, Salvation Army, Natchez Stewpot, most influential Woman of the Decade year 2000, Krewe of Janus and NAACP.
Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Keith Matthews; two step-children, Johnetta Gordon and Dodge Bacon; a brother, Odessa Hughes; a sister, Edith Pipes; a son-in-law, Percy Ferguson Sr.; and a brother-in-law, John Causey.
Survivors include her husband, John Bacon of Natchez; two daughters, Roslyn “Diane” Carter and husband, Joseph and Glenda “Faye” Ferguson and a son, Xavier Bacon, all of Natchez; step-children, Henry Lee Harris, Mary Fleming, Jessie Lewis and husband, Willie and Sybil Green, all of Natchez and Charles Bacon and wife, Valarie, both of Jackson; four grandchildren, Kimberly C. Shannon and husband, Nicholas I, both of Baton Rouge, Courtney Ferguson and companion, Cecil and Bria Ferguson, all of Natchez; great-grandchildren, Cameron Harris of Natchez and Nicholas Shannon II of Baton Rouge; siblings, Jerry Schoby of Baton, Barney Schoby and wife, Joyceria, both of Byron, Henry Hughes and wife, Joyce, T.J. Hughes and wife, Bessie, Eddie Hughes and wife, Queen and Lillie Causey, all of Liberty, Stella Perkins and husband, Billie, Robert Hughes and wife, Naomi, Larry Hughes and wife, Carolyn, Curtis Hughes and wife, Gloria, Geneva Walker and husband, Ernest and Juaneva Addison and husband, Ellis, all of Texas and Willie Faye Anderson of New Orleans; brothers and sisters-in-law, Henry Bacon and wife, Willie Mae, Earl Bacon and wife, Florence and Christmas Carol Bacon, all of Natchez, Adelene Foreman of Ala., Hannah Dillon and Mary Liza Thompson, both of Indianola and Julia Christian and husband, Christ, both of Jackson; two god-children, LaTonya Green of Ind. and Donell Charrier and wife, Bobbie, both of Corpus Christi, Texas; and a number of other relatives and friends.
Pallbearers will be Masonic Brothers.
