FERRIDAY — An accident involving an 18-wheeler and a four-wheeler resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy Thursday evening in Ferriday.
A family friend at the scene identified the boy as Michael Griggs, of Ferriday.
The accident occurred at approximately 5:50 p.m. at Levens Addition Road.
Gary D. Haney, 67, of Cave Springs, Ark., was driving the 18-wheeler in the eastbound lane.
John Keith, one of the first people at the scene after the accident, said Griggs had been riding his four-wheeler up and down Calhoun Road for most of the evening prior to the accident.
“I saw him speed out there and I heard the crash,” he said.
Keith said Griggs did not stop at the intersection of Calhoun and U.S. 84 West when he collided with the 18-wheeler.
The Hanma four-wheeler collided with the right rear portion of the Peterbilt 18-wheeler, according to a Louisiana State Police press release. The release confirmed that Griggs had failed to stop at the stop sign.
Griggs was ejected from his four-wheeler and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a helmet, and he was decapitated in the accident.
Haney was not injured in the crash.
Routine toxicology tests are pending.
