VIDALIA — Traffic was closed on one side of the Mississippi River bridge after an early morning car accident that resulted in one fatality.
Two others were injured in the accident and were airlifted to a Jackson hospital. Those involved were reportedly from Ferriday.
Vidalia Police officers were working to reconstruct the scene on the Natchez-bound bridge Sunday morning and early afternoon. Traffic was flowing in both directions on the Vidalia-bound bridge.
The bridge reopened to traffic at approximately 2:30 p.m.
The four-car accident occurred at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday. Some passengers have been transported to Jackson to be treated for injuries.
Louisiana State Police are assisting in the investigation.
Vidalia Police and state police had not been available for comment as of 3:30 p.m. Officers on the scene would not comment, and officers at the station said they would not release further information until Monday morning. Police Chief Billy Hammers has said he has no information. VPD Captain Arthur Lewis said he did not know how many passengers were involved or how many fatalities there were.
Since the accident occurred on the Natchez-bound bridge, Vidalia officers are in charge of the investigation. Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said none of his officers were involved in filing a report or investigating the scene.
