NATCHEZ —The failure of a single power line knocked out power for a large portion of Adams County Tuesday night.

The outage extended out US Highway 84 and north of Burger King on U.S. 61, said Adams County Supervisor S.E. “Spanky” Felter,

“There’s a lot of people on that one line. I guess it shows you how important that one line is,” he said.

Entergy supervisor Travis Leggett said the outage was caused when one of the pieces holding the power lines together malfunctioned, and that the power company would be proactive in finding out what caused it.

“We’re going to send them off to have them tested because the worst thing that could happen is two weeks from now is one of the other sleeves up there could fail,” he said.

All three sleeves would be replaced Tuesday night Leggett said.

“When something like this happens our first concern is public safety. The line looks harmless but it could be deadly,” he said.

Leggett also said that around three-fourths of the customers affected had power restored by 10:30 p.m. According to their service records, 346 customers were still without power and would be for several more hours.

“We have a nursing home out of lights and I want to get them back on a soon as we can,” he said.
