JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — The Mississippi House won’t have to return to the Capitol during the Memorial Day weekend.
House officials say Gov. Haley Barbour is bringing the chamber back Tuesday afternoon — the same time the Senate returns.
A special session started this week, and the House met only four hours before voting to end its work.
Despite the vote, the House will have to reconvene because the state constitution says one chamber can’t leave more than three days without the other chamber’s permission. The governor also can set a time for lawmakers to return.
The House and Senate have passed separate bills to keep the state employment agency alive, but they need to reach a compromise on the issue. They’re also still working on plans to increase unemployment benefits.
