NATCHEZ — After suffering through an 0-10 football season in 2007, the Adams County Christian Rebels have begun the road to an improved record in 2008.

The Rebels recently completed their spring practice, and coach Paul Hayles is pleased with the direction the team is headed in.

“You always want to continue to learn and grow,” Hayles said. “We had a very physical spring. From day one to the final day we were in full pads. We had every bit of contact we could. We’ve got a lot of steps to take but that was a good first step.”

Hayles said the despite the poor 2007 season, the player’s mindsets coming into the spring were good ones.

“Everyone is confident we are going to get better,” Hayles said. “We believe in the system and know it will work. We’re going to continue to push and work as hard as we can.”

Hayles said an important piece to a successful season is quarterback Colin Dollar, who looked impressive during spring drills.

“Colin was baptized under fire last year,” Hayles said. “He was put into a difficult situation last year. We’re anxious to see how he’ll continue to grow and were pleased with his performance in the spring.”

There are also going to be some new faces on the 2008 team that might see quite a bit of playing time.

“We’ve got players coming up from the junior high ranks and there will be competition across the board, which is a good thing.” Hayles said. “These kids are willing to work and we’ve got a coaching staff that will work with them.”

And work is what the team will be doing during the summer months.

“We have the best athletic facilities in town and we’re going to be using them,” Hayles said. “There will be a lot of running and some swimming pool work as well a lots of lifting in our weight room and bleacher work. We’re looking for good things from the kids. We’re excited about it.”
