JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — At least four people were injured Tuesday when an Amtrak passenger train collided with a garbage truck on a rural stretch of track in Copiah County, south of Jackson.
The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. between Terry and Hazlehurst.
Emergency crews from Copiah County and Hinds County were at the scene as were officials from local fire departments.
Authorities said the engine of the southbound City of New Orlean came to rest a few yards from the Mississippi Highway 27 overpass.
The extent of the injuries was not known. Mississippi Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Katherine Crowell said two of the four people injured were taken to the hospital while two others were being treated at the scene.
Crowell said it’s was unclear if the injured were on the train or in the truck.
Matt Morning, of St. Louis, who was returning to school at the University of New Orleans, said he and another student were eating in the dining car when the accident occurred.
“We were just sitting when all of the sudden we felt this incredible jolt,” Morning said.
Morning said it felt like the train was going to jump the tracks, then people came into the dining car and told everyone to stay put.
“They later came back and directed us to the exits. We’re just kind of stranded,” Morning said.
A fire broke out after the collision, authorities said, damaging the engine.
Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said the train left Chicago on Monday night and was due in Louisiana this afternoon. Its estimated 100 passengers have been moved to a nearby shelter and could be taken to their destination by bus if the locomotive is damaged.
The northbound City of New Orleans was held at the station just as it was set to depart Tuesday afternoon, Magliari said.
Canadian National Railway owns the tracks.
