DURHAM, N.C. — Southern Miss ace pitcher Barry Bowden added another accolade to his stellar senior campaign as Baseball America named him a third-team All-American.
Bowden was a first team All Conference-USA selection this season, was named C-USA pitcher of the week three times and national pitcher of the week twice in the same week by two different publications.
He was 8-3 with a 2.12 ERA this season recording 78 strikeouts while walking only 22 and limiting opposing hitters to a .188 average.
Though he was not taken in the 2008 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft he was signed to a free agent contract by the Kansas City Royals and reported to their Class A club Wednesday.
Bowden becomes the 11th Southern Miss player to earn All-American honors under head coach Corky Palmer.
In total, 11 players have garnered 26 All-American honors, including Tyler Conn who was named a first team All-American earlier this week by the NCBWA.
Nine players have also been named freshman All-American including Todd McInnis, who was named to the freshman All-American team this season.
The staff of Baseball America selects the All-America teams after the round of super-regional play.
