FERRIDAY — An era is coming to a close for the Huntington Lady Hounds girl’s basketball team.

Recently girl’s basketball coach Penny Moak decided to step down from her post.

“I’ve been thinking about it for a couple of years, but I made the final decision in April,” Moak said. “I’m kind of tired and the team I have right now, I feel like they need a fresh face.”

Along with being the girl’s basketball coach, Moak was also a math teacher, and coached cross-country and track, which somewhat led to Moak being overwhelmed.

“I’ve been putting in 12-hour days for 12 months it seems like,” Moak said. “It just kind of gets old.”

Longtime opponent Melanie Hall, who is currently the Adams County Christian School girl’s basketball coach, said she supports and understands Moak’s decision to resign as women’s basketball coach.

“Penny and I go way back, we played against one another in high school and had a great rivalry,” Hall said. “I back Penny Moak 100 percent and I’m happy for her and what she decides to do.”

Although Moak’s teams have not fared rather well over the past couple of years, her legacy may be as a fierce competitor.

Hall described Moak as an intense and competitive coach who wanted to do whatever it took to win.

Looking back over her career, Moak said the moments that matter most are when former players stay in touch.

She described an instance after she first arrived at Huntington when a former player from Parkview Baptist was traveling through en route to Monroe and stopped to catch up.

“It’s always good when you hear from past players,” Moak said. “Those are the kind of things that really mean the most to me.”

Although she resigned as girl’s basketball coach, Moak said she will still coach girls track, boys and girls cross-country and teach math.

Moak began coaching girl’s junior varsity basketball in 1993, and has been at Huntington since 1991.
