FERRIDAY — After a five-years plus wait, Mary Green’s tombstone is headed home.
Originally dumped in a Natchez yard as a Halloween prank five years ago, the tombstone sat at the Natchez Police Station until early May, when Lt. Tom McGehee contacted the Louisiana Department of Vital Records and traced the headstone to a Ferriday cemetery.
The stone was then transferred to the Ferriday police, but sat at the station when no one immediately came forward to claim it.
That changed over the weekend, however, when Green’s granddaughter came to the police station to claim the stone, the Ferriday police said Monday.
Born in 1900, Green died in 1977.
