SW Miss. team finishes third in State Games

MERIDIAN — The Southwest Mississippi District 7 team finished third in the Mississippi State Games All-Star baseball tournament at Meridian Community College over the weekend.

It was the district’s second straight year finishing third in the tournament.

The team coached by South Pike’s Jason Cooksey and Franklin County’s Brent Calcote collected the bronze medal with a 15-4 victory over District 5.

Cathedral’s Preston Edwards collected the win for District 7, while Brookhaven Academy catcher Kolby Bryd provided the fireworks with a home run and a single for three RBI. Bryd hit two homers in the tourney.

Brookhaven High products Bud Britt and Nick Helmstetter also had multiple hits, as did Franklin County’s DeHendret Collins. Parklane’s Josh Armstreet hit a two run homer.

Paced by two back to back victories, the District 7 team rebounded from an opening round lost to start the tournament.

It was the third time in 8 years that District 7 won a medal in the games, collecting silver in 2000 and bronze in 2007 and 2008.
