WINNSBORO — Cole Cangemi drove in the winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Vidalia 9 and 10-year-old All-Stars escaped with a 15-14 win over Winnsboro late Sunday night.
Vidalia took a 14-9 lead into the top of the sixth inning, but Winnsboro rallied to score five runs in the frame and tie the game.
Vidalia then loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth before Cangemi hit a ball to the base of the right field fence that drove in the winning run.
Cangemi’s winning hit was the capper to a great night. He also hit a two-run single in the bottom of the first inning and a three-run homer in the bottom of the third. He also pitched three strong innings for Vidalia.
“Cole did everything tonight except drive us to the ballpark,” Vidalia coach Whest Shirley said. “He hit and pitched great.”
Winnsboro scored five runs in the top of the first inning to take an early lead but Vidalia chipped away with two runs in the first and a single run in the second.
Vidalia then broke loose for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning, capped off by Cangemi’s blast over the centerfield fence.
