Annual scrapbook convention begins July 24

Pam Frank is an avid scrapbooker stranded in a town that doesn’t cater to her hobby.
That’s why four years ago she started a scrapbooking convention that takes place during the summer in Natchez.
This year, she’ll be raffling off what she calls a “crafter’s dream” during the three-day Scrap-N on the River convention that is slated to begin July 24.
Participants can try their luck at winning a Scrapbox, which is an organizational table which folds out to about nine feet in length, but can be easily and neatly stored.
“It’s a crafter’s dream because everything is right there,” she said. “When you’re not working on it you can close it up.”
Aiming to sell all 300 raffle tickets at $20 a piece, Frank said the money will go towards a scholarship that was set up in memory of her brother, Jerry Roberts who died in a plane crash in 2006.
Last year they gave the scholarship to Vidalia High School graduate Doug Logan, who won the hearts of the family with not only his need for the $1,000 but also his essay on why he’s proud to be an American.
“I know my brother would have been very proud,” she said.
This year, if all tickets are sold, the scholarship will be $6,000.
The convention’s slightly humble beginnings of 75 women has rapidly escalated to the 250 women that will come to town to enjoy the convention’s theme of Christmas in July.
Every year Frank said there is a theme and she is excited about this year.
In fact, her mother Sue Cockerham has decided make a home cooked Christmas dinner for all the ladies on Saturday night, which has been deemed Pajama Night.
The ladies will not only be scrapping throughout the convention, they’ll have the opportunity to sell and buy crafts.
Shopping is an option and while shoppers do so, they can go through the “Make and Take Alley” where a participant can learn to make five things, such as a picture frame or card, and then take it with them.
Longer more in depth seminars are also available to the participants and include learning such techniques as personalizing Christmas ornaments, digital scrapbooking and more.
For Frank and fellow scrapbookers, whipping out the glue and scissors is just downright fun.
“Scrapbooking to a woman is what hunting, fishing and golf are to a man,” she said.
