HATTIESBURG — Andrew Beesley doubled to bring in Jeremy Myles with the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Natchez 10-year-olds All-Stars rallied to defeat Magee 4-3 Friday afternoon at the South Regional Tournament.
Myles led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and then stole second base on a passed ball with Beesley at the plate. Then it was up to Beesley to deliver the big hit and he did just that.
“It was a good, tight ball game. This was the kind of game we needed to get the butterflies out,” Natchez coach Jeff Webb said. “Magee was supposed to be one of the better teams here.”
Natchez received a bye today and will play again on Sunday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the game between Petal American and the winner of Friday’s game between Pascagoula and Raleigh. Sunday’s game will be broadcast on KISS 97.3 FM.
This opening-round game was a game of momentum shifts between district runner-up Natchez and the District 5 champion.
After Magee scored its first run in the top of the first inning, Natchez responded with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Beesley led off with a single, followed by back-to-back walks issued to Will Moffett and Landon Seyfarth to load the bases. Tyler Wilson then doubled to score Beesley and Moffett to give Natchez a 2-1 lead.
Magee rallied to take the lead with one run in the top of the second and one run in the top of the fourth. But Natchez tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth.’
Christopher White led off the bottom of the fourth with a walk and, after a strikeout, stole second on a passed ball. Seyfarth the doubled to bring in White.
Wilson pitched the first two innings for Natchez, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out four. Seyfarth was the winning pitcher as he allowed just one run on two hits in four innings of relief.
“He (Wilson) was having a hard time keeping the ball down,” Webb said. “We were going to go 2-2-2, but Landon pitched a good game and we were getting some good defense behind him, so we let him stay in. He was able to keep the ball down and keep us in the game.”
Among those that made some key defensive plays for Natchez were second baseman Brody Cole and centerfielder Skeeter Myles.
