NATCHEZ — It took three eagles for the team of George Hude, Joe Brumfield, Allen Smith and Bubba Bruce to defend its championship at the 2008 ACCS Booster Club Four-Person Scramble.

Hude, Brumfield, Smith and Bruce also had 11 birdies on the Duncan Park Golf Course Saturday morning to finish with a round of 17-under-par 54 — two shots lower than their winning score a year ago and one shot ahead of two other teams in the championship flight.

“We just had a super round. We knew it was going to take at least that. There were some very good teams out here,” Brumfield said.

After a birdie on No. 9 to start their round, they would go on to eagle the par-5 14th, the par-4 1st, and the par-5 5th.

They almost finished their round with an eagle on the difficult par-4 8th hole.

“We had a chip-in for eagle on No. 1. We had a two- or three-inch birdie putt to wrap our day,” Brumfield said.

“We hit the ball very well.”

A scorecard playoff had to settle second and third places in the championship flight.

The team of Gill Morris, Tim McCann, Ron Rushing and Mike Halford shot a 16-under-par 55, as did Stephen Edwards, Brian Fisher, Hunter McKeivier and Blake Chancellor.

The Morris-McCann-Rushing-Halford team wound up in second because of an eagle on the par-4 12th, the first hole on the scorecard playoff. They had 10 birdies and eagles on No. 5, No. 12 (par-4) and No. 14.

“We shot a lot better this year than I thought we would,” McKeivier said. “Everyone else had to pick up the slack because I didn’t play well. Blake, who’s a friend of mine from Hattiesburg, hit one about 350 yards on No. 14.”

The Edwards-Fisher-McKeivier-Chancellor team had 14 birdies and an eagle on No.14.

Eleven teams participated in this year’s four-person scramble in which all the proceeds go to the ACCS Booster Club.

“Very pleased with the turnout. Good day to play golf. We’ve got a lot of sponsors who helped us,” McKeivier said. “We’re trying to find a way to build a new wooden fence at the baseball field. It may take a couple of years.”

The Britton &Koontz-sponsored team of Curtis Moroney, Chris Maxwell, Kevin Smith and Wade Heatherly took first place in the first flight with a round of 10-under-par 61.
