Jackson school board announces finalists

JACKSON (AP) β€” The Jackson Public Schools board has released the names of five finalists for superintendent.

The board says it plans to meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday β€˜β€˜to finalize the next steps in the search.

The finalists are: Lonnie Edwards Sr., an education program specialist with the Georgia Department of Education; Harvey A. Franklin Sr., assistant superintendent of the Walton County, Ga., public schools; Luis Gonzalez, superintendent of the Mathis Independent School District in Mathis, Texas; Delores W. Hopkins, former deputy superintendent of the Jackson public schools and now an education consultant and college professor; and Rebecca S. Lowry, assistant superintendent of the Dayton Public School District in Dayton, Ohio. All five have doctoral-level degrees.

Superintendent Earl Watkins announced in early April that he would not seek to renew his contract.
