Whether you want to reduce stress, find an alternative way to cope with pain or deepen your spiritual roots, Natchez Yoga welcomes you.

Located at 119 N. Pearl St., Natchez Yoga will open with a registration for classes Tuesday.

The registration will include an introductory lecture about what yoga is, said Danielle Craft who, along with yoga partner Stacy Worley, is opening the studio.

“It will explain how the classes will be structured, and the different types of yoga,” Craft said. “There are two types, Hatha yoga, which is the physical, and Rhja, which is mental.”

The classes will be six-weeks long, and though once a week attendance is necessary, those taking the class may repeat it as many times a week as they want — the beginner’s first-half class will be offered five times a week and the beginner’s second-half class will be offered four times a week.

The studio will also offer advanced classes and a relaxation yoga class.

The school of yoga that Natchez Yoga will offer comes from the teachings of T. Krishnamancharya and his son D. K.V. Desikachar, which is not as stringent as far as the physical practice is concerned, Craft said.

Krishnamancharya was sickly as a child, and so his teacher had to develop an alternative yoga method for him.

“Our teaching method is different,” Craft said. “Instead of placing our mats in front and doing the poses, we walk among the students and touch everyone to make sure they have the posture correct.”

The aim of Natchez Yoga is to make the practice accessible to everyone.

“Our goal is to give them tools to take home and develop a practice they can use in their everyday life,” Craft said. “To do that, we’re just going to have to adapt to everyone.”

One common misconception about yoga is that it is a religion, which it is not, but its meditative practices can give a practitioner a new perspective on the world, Craft said.

“I started with the physical practice, but I was just in and out with it and I didn’t develop my own (routine) practice until four years ago,” Craft said. “Now it’s like the scene in ‘The Wizard of Oz’ where Dorothy walks through the door and everything comes in color.”

That is the reason why Craft and Worley decided to open the studio, she said.

“We just wanted to share the joy of yoga with everyone,” Craft said.

The studio will also sell yoga mats, meditation cousins, yoga bags and books that will correlate with the classes.
