NATCHEZ – Services for Grover Stanton Jr., 69, of Baton Rouge, formerly of Natchez, who died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at the Butterfly Wing of Ollie Steele Burden Manor, will be at 2 p.m. today at Laird Funeral Home Union Street Chapel.
Burial will follow at Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from noon until service time today at the funeral home.
Mr. Stanton was a retired investigator with the Louisiana State Office of Attorney. He was a U. S. Navy veteran.
He received his bachelor of science degree in accounting from Northeast Louisiana State College in Monroe. His special interest in the Civil War was reflected in his memberships in the Baton Rouge Civil War Roundtable, Henry Watkins Allen Camp No. 133, Sons of Confederate Veterans, North-South Skirmish Association, 14th Mississippi.
Grover was generous and fun-loving. He enjoyed spending time with family, friends and pursuing many hobbies. He looked forward to meeting friends at skirmishes, writing newsletters and meeting new people.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Grover Stanton Sr. and Ruby Hammett Stanton; and one sister, Barbara Stanton Cumbus.
Survivors include his wife of 37 years, Anne Gibbs Stanton; a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Grover felt especially close to his cousins, Sharon Barnett of Natchez, Vernon Dawson of Woodville , his Hammett cousins of Natchez and their families.
Pallbearers will be Leslie Bowen, Derek Bowen, Jim Barnett, Martin Hammett Jr., Eric Dawson and Wes Dawson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Vernon Dawson, Ed Henry, Skeeter Hammett and George Gibbs.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Castine, St. Joseph Hospice and staff of the Butterfly Wing for their care during his six-year battle with cancer.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph Hospice Foundation or Camp Moore Confederate Cemetery Museum.
