NATCHEZ — Coming off an impressive 24-hit attack in a 28-4 win over Vicksburg last Monday, the Cathedral Lady Green Wave was hoping for more of the same against Warren Central Thursday night.

But would Cathedral’s bats have a letdown against the Class 5A Lady Vikings after such a performance against the Class 4A Missy Gators? The answer to that would be no, but the outcome was a lot closer as Cathedral held on for a 9-7 win.

“It was a good game. They’ve got a really good team,” Cathedral head coach Gary Blackwell said. “We just came out hitting the ball. That’s what’s going to get us through the year. I was a little concerned when they first got here before the game. They were a little flat.”

Cathedral scored six runs in the bottom of the third inning to take an 8-3 lead, but Warren Central scored three runs in the top of the fourth and one run in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-7.

“We got up and then kind of made a few mental errors. They had the bases loaded and we made a few mistakes and they scored some runs,” Blackwell said. “I’m real proud of my girls for keeping their composure and staying in there and playing hard.”

After being held scoreless in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings, the Lady Green Wave scored one run in the bottom of the sixth to take a two-run lead. Winning pitcher Rachel Smilo then preserved the win by keeping the Lady Vikings off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh.

“Our bats got a little cold there,” Blackwell said. “We were hitting the ball hard, but they made some good plays.”

Cathedral (3-1) and Warren Central combined for 33 hits in the game – 18 for the Lady Green Wave, 15 for the Lady Vikings – yet only two of them went for extra bases. Elizabeth Blackwell, who went 3-for-4, had a lead-off triple in the bottom of the first inning for Cathedral, and K. Patton had a double for Warren Central.

“Our leadoff batter got a triple and that set the tone for us the rest of the game. They want to make the playoffs and this was a good step,” Blackwell said.

Betsy Daggett went 3-for-3 with three runs batted in, Ginny Daggett was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and Melissa Cavin drove in two runs. Smilo also had a good game at the plate as she went 2-for-3.

Cathedral will play in the Warren Central Tournament on Saturday. The Lady Green Wave will take on Vicksburg at 9:45 a.m. and Greenville-Weston at 12:15 p.m. If they get out of their pool, they will continue on later in the afternoon.

ACCS at River Oaks postponed

NATCHEZ — The ACCS Lady Rebels are still yet to play a single District 3-AA game this season. And now it won’t be until next Tuesday until that happens. That is because both of their district games that were to take place this week were postponed because of the weather.

First, ACCS’s home game against Riverfield was rained out. Then the rain during the week forced the postponement of Thursday night’s game at River Oaks in Monroe, La. Lady Rebels head coach Rick Fife said he does not yet know when those games will be played.

The Lady Rebels host WCCA in a non-district game next Monday with the junior varsity game at 4 p.m., followed by the varsity game. Then next Tuesday, they will finally get under way in district play at Trinity Episcopal at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex. The JV game starts at 4 p.m. and the varsity game will start at 5 p.m.
