Huntington stomped by Central Private

BAKER, La. — If Huntington is going to be one of the top teams in Class A, it will have to play better than it did Friday night at Central Private.

The Hounds did not play anything like the No. 2-ranked team in Class A as the offense turned the ball over six times and the defense gave up 413 yards of total offense in a 41-13 loss to the Class AA Rebels.

Offensively, Huntington (0-1) was not on track. The Hounds had just 58 yards rushing on 21 carries while quarterback Joey Roberts completed 3 of 6 passes for 69 yards with one interception.

Central Private, which had a strong running game to complement its passing game, scored 14 points in the second quarter to take a 21-6 halftime lead. The Rebels then put the game away by outscoring the Hounds 20-7 in the third quarter.

The Rebels’ rushing attack had its way with the Hounds’ defense – 40 total carries for 266 yards. They also did a good in the air with seven completions in 11 attempts for 147 yards.

Huntington hosts WCCA to begin MPSA District 6-A play at 7 p.m. Friday.

ST. JOSEPH, La. — Tensas Academy’s first-ever eight-man football game had a lot of offense as the Chiefs, led by the running of Jim Lentz, held on to defeat the Cougars from Meridian.

Lentz finished with 19 carries for 301 yards and four touchdown runs. His 49-yard touchdown run in the first quarter gave the Chiefs a 14-8 lead. He then added scoring runs of 73 and 12 yards early in the second quarter for a 28-8 lead. He also caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Jon-Truman James later on in the quarter for a 36-14 lead.

Calvary Christian scored three touchdowns after that to cut the lead to 44-32 at the end of the third quarter. But the Cougars could get no closer as the Chiefs scored twice in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

James went 8-for-11 passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns and Mitch Lansing caught four passes for 87 yards and one touchdown. As a team, Tensas (1-0) had 482 yards of total offense and turned the ball over just once.
