NATCHEZ — Two downtown businesses were burglarized this week and police say they have the man responsible.

Alonzo M. Hoye, 32, 9 Prentiss St., was arrested Monday while jumping out of the broken window of Natchez Coffee Company at 5:12 a.m. Friday he was charged with burglary of a business.

Hoye originally told police officers his name was Michael Williams, but his Mississippi Department of Corrections Discharge Certificate, which was in his wallet, proved otherwise.

“He was recently released from the penitentiary,” Natchez Police Chief Mike Mullins said.

Thanks in part to the watch he was wearing, police were also able to tie Hoye to an August 29 burglary of a jewelry store.

“We recovered some of the jewelry from his possession,” Mullins said.

While Hoye allegedly stole over a thousand dollars worth of merchandise from the jewelry store, Mullins said, nothing was taken from the Natchez Coffee Company.

“There’s not much of value he could have walked out with, but he didn’t walk out with so much as a Coke or a base ball hat,” Natchez Coffee Company owner Bill Furlow said.

However, there was a five-minute gap between the time the store’s alarm sounded and when the police arrived, so Furlow said he knows that Hoye spent time inside the store.

Although police did recover some of the jewelry from Hoye, Mullins does not know how much more they can get back.

“Normally the individuals in situations like this tend to sell the items very quickly,” Mullins said.

However, anyone who received the jewelry could be charged with receiving stolen property, Mullins said.

Hoye is being held on $35,000 bond for the Natchez Coffee Company burglary and bond has not been set for the jewelry store burglary.
