Piece of history

VIDALIA — All the way from New Jersey, a little piece of Sept. 11 memorabilia is parked at a body shop on U.S. 84.

And it all came to be because one Monterey resident was in the market for a used fire truck.

In June, Joshua Calkins saw a fire truck up for bid on E-Bay.

After the bidding ended he contacted the owners and they agreed on a price.

That sent him and his father on a trip to New Jersey to pick up Calkins’ newest purchase.

Calkins said he was told the truck was used for search and rescue work after the attacks on the World Trade Center.

“It’s like lagniappe,” Calkins said of the truck’s history.

Calkins is a volunteer firefighter with the Monterey station and the Assistant Chief of the Parhams Volunteer Fire Department.

Working on fire trucks is one of his passions.

Calkins said when the body and electrical work on the truck is complete he plans to sell it.

“I’d love to keep it,” he said. “But I just can’t justify it.”

But Calkins said he’s about 70 percent through the restorations and won’t likely have the truck much longer. The truck is currently having bodywork done because it was in an accident while responding to a call, not related to the World Trade Center attacks.

“It’s going to be good for a station somewhere,” he said.
