RAYVILLE, La. — The Adams County Christian softball team will continue on to the MPSA South State Tournament after finishing Wednesday’s district tournament 2-2.
The Lady Rebels started with a 9-1 win against Trinity Episcopal. Mary Sanders no-hit the Lady Saints to record the win.
Adams County scored eight runs in the first inning and another in the second for the convincing victory, thanks in part to a 2-for-2 game by Abby Gibens and a double by Sarah Beth Fuller.
They dropped game two, 5-0, to Prairie View, to move into the loser’s bracket. Megan Cole was 2-for-2 for the Lady Rebels, who had three hits, and Sanders recorded the loss.
“Prairie View has a real good pitcher (Tyson), and she kind of overpowered us in that second game,” said ACCS coach Rick Fife. “We’d faced her in our only district game we were able to play, and she had our number. They 10-run ruled us, and we improved against her today so I think we were going in the right direction.”
The Lady Rebels had a come-from-behind victory in their third game, 5-1 against Riverfield Academy, scoring two runs in the fourth inning and three in the fifth.
Mary Sanders, who took the win, and Chelsea Freeman both had doubles for ACCS, and Katie Hewitt hit a triple.
But the fourth game proved exhausting for the Lady Rebels and Sanders, who developed a blister from so much work.
River Oaks beat ACCS, 6-4, as the Lady Rebels scored all their runs in the first. There were no multiple hitters for either team, although Fuller had a double.
ACCS out-hit River Oaks, five hits to two, despite the loss, and both teams committed one error.
The games started at 9 a.m. and ended around 4:30 p.m.
“This was a little bit more [playing] than we’re used to,” Fife said. “Offensively we did well, we executed at times and in certain situations, such as punting bunts down and making good contact. I think we had maybe two errors all day so we played well defensively.”
Now the Rebels will travel to Liberty to play in the Amite School Center on Wednesday, although Fife has not yet received a bracket or game times.
“In the next few days of practice we’ll work on defensive situations, Fife said. “Offensively we’ll just continue to hit the ball in the cage.”
Cathedral 14, St. Aloysius 0
Cathedral shutout rival St. Aloysius by the score of 14-0.
Betsy Daggett, who went 2-for-4 for the night, hit a double as part of the Green Wave’s 14 hits.
Rachel Smilo, the winning pitcher who allowed just one hit, went 2-for-4, and three players were 2-for-3.
The Green Wave plays a district game against Bogue Chitto on Monday, and the seniors on the team will be honored before the game.
