NATCHEZ — Prescriptions are undeniably pricey, but Adams County residents now have a way of easing some of the expense.
Adams County Supervisor Darryl Grennell, through the National Association of Counties, has instituted a discount program in the county.
Prescription discount cards are available to the uninsured or the underinsured.
“The average savings is 29.36 percent based on the data,” Grennell said.
Ten other counties in Mississippi have started this program, giving 9,250 residents the ability to save money.
And in approximately two years, $260,604 has been saved through the program.
“I just pray that people will take advantage of this program,” Grennell said.
He said he realizes a lot of people are uninsured or underinsured in the county.
“I know a lot of people personally who work jobs who don’t have health plans and this is something that can help those families,” he said.
The cards are available in many county offices — tax collectors, tax assessor, sanitation department, accounting department, justice court, circuit and chancery clerk’s office, board of supervisor’s office, juvenile justice building and also city hall.
Many of the county’s pharmacies participate in the program including, Byron’s Drug Store, Wilson Drug Store, Rite Aid, CVS, the Wal-Mart and Kmart pharmacies, Ernst, Fred’s, Winn and both Walgreens.
Grennell’s interest was piqued when he first learned of the program at a NACO meeting in January.
He filled out all the necessary paperwork and got approval from the board of supervisors, for which he is thankful.
When using the card, proof of residency is required.
Grennell said there are 96 cards printed in Spanish.
