VIDALIA — The man who was involved in a shooting incident with a Vidalia police officer Wednesday has been booked on a firearms charge.
Vondall A. Hawkins, 20, 807 Second St., Ferriday, was arrested on charges of unauthorized entry of an inhabited dwelling, aggravated assault with a firearm and aggravated criminal damage to property following a shooting incident involving an officer Wednesday.
Vidalia Assistant Chief of Police Arthur Lewis said he was not at liberty to discuss the details of the event because the incident is being investigated by the Louisiana State Police.
LSP Troop E Public Affairs Officer Scott Moreau confirmed that the state police is investigating the shooting Thursday.
Once given clearance by the state police, the Vidalia Police Department will release further details, Lewis said.
Hawkins was reportedly injured in the leg and grazed on the arm by bullets.
The officer involved in the incident was reportedly injured in the foot.
The incident occurred mid-morning in the 400 block area of southern Cedar Street. Most of the residents in the area were not home.
Family members said Wednesday that Hawkins had been taken to the Vidalia police station by a third party that morning, but that when he arrived he ran on foot and was pursued by an officer.
The family said they did not know other details.
Information about why Hawkins faces the charges he was booked on — or if those charges are even connected to Wednesday’s incident or to other alleged actions — has not been released yet.
